Colossal statues of Pre-Dynastic age (5500-3100 B.C.) from the site
of Koptos in Upper Egypt and now exhibited in the Ashmolean Museum,
Oxford, UK. The monuments reproduced are representations of the god
Min, an ancient fertility god, responsible for the fecundity of the
fields and animals. These are among the earliest representations of
the god, shown while holding in his left hand the erected phallus, symbol
of generative power. In other depictions the god holds in his right
hand a flail with which to smite his enemies.
