Marble statue of Bes, from Colonna on the Alban Hills, dating to the I century A.D. and now in the Museum of Ancient Sculpture (Museo di Scultura Antica Giovanni Barracco) in Rome, Italy. Bes was frequently represented wearing a lion’s skin and brandishing a knife to ward off evil demons. He was also regarded as a god of music and entertainment and was therefore shown with a tambourine in his hand.
