View on the archaeological site of Banias, in the Golan Heights in North-western
Syria, where was located a great sacred centre dedicated to the god
Pan. The temenos (sacred precinct) comprised a temple, various courtyards
and a cave and was built during the Ptolemaic period (III century B.C.).
The place was called by the Greeks Paneas, from the name of the spring
which gushed out near the cave, a name derived in its turn from that
of the god Pan, who was believed inhabiting these places.
