Painting on the wooden ceiling of the Benedictine Church of St. Michael
(Michaeliskirche), Hildesheim, Germany. The building has been established
in the X century, while the painted wooden ceiling is datable to about
1230. Christ’s genealogy is described, beginning with the very
progenitors of the whole of humanity, Adam and Eve, represented alongside
the tree which was the cause of their fall. In the scene other trees
are shown: one among them reveals Christ’s face among the branches.
It is probably a depiction of the “Tree of Jesse”, a schematic
representation of Jesus’ genealogy, which originates from king
David’s father, Jesse.
