of a Mesopotamian seal (III millennium B.C.) in the British Museum,
London. The scene describes the fight of the god Marduk against the
monster Tiamat. Marduk is the god of the city of Babylon and is the
main protagonist celebrated in the creation epic entitled Enuma Elish,
in which he is presented as the savior of the gods and the creator of
the cosmos. Tiamat is the personification of the original chaos, represented
by the primordial waters. From Tiamat’s dismembered body Marduk
created the heaven, the earth and the universe in all its components
(Jacobsen 2005). |
