Cylinder seal and its impression, belonging to the Uruk-Jemdet Nasr
period (3200-3000 B.C.), showing a divinity who holds two flowered branches,
flanked by two goats or rams which browse on the flowers. It is probably
a representation of Dumuzi, the Sumerian shepherd god, in the appearance
of a vegetation and fertility god, who periodically dies and comes to
life again. The identification is reinforced by the seal knob, sculte
in the shape of a lamb or ram, the animal symbol of Dumuzi. The object
is in the National Museums (Staatliche Museen), Berlin. |
