Wild feline images (above and below) engraved on the side of steles at Göbekli Tepe (Turkey, about 9,500 B.C.). In the ancient Near East the representation of the feline is often associated with a female divinity personifying the generative power and fecundity: this relationship emphasizes the link between the fertility of the woman and of the earth and the “wild” space inhabited by the animals.
