Alignment of menhirs (standing stones) at Kermario, near Carnac (Brittany, France). This megalithic complex is one of the largest in the world and is composed by more than one thousand standing stones, of various sizes, arranged in long parallel rows stretching for about one kilometer. Though the exact function of these monuments is unknown, scholars have identified astronomical meanings in most of the alignments. It is probable that in this places ceremonial activities were performed in correspondence with the main points of the seasonal cycle (Laporte, Le Roux 2004). The monument has been built between 4000 and 2000 B.C.
