Female Symbols

Back

Earthenware female figure sitting on a throne, from Çatalhöyük (Anatolia, Turkey), attributable to the VII millennium B.C. The statuette, with particularly abundant forms, can be considered one of the first representations of the Great Goddess, personifying the principle of fecundity. The armrests of the seat are made by lions, animals frequently associated with the female divinities in the Near East.
The artifact is in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Ankara, Turkey.
