Remains of a great statue representing a female divinity, found in the
temple complex of Tarxien (Malta) and dating to about 2800 B.C. in this
locality, three temples have been brought to light, into which female
statues and animal reliefs (pigs, goats and bulls) have been discovered
(Evans 1959). This could suggest the hypothesis of a ceremonial centre
devoted to the cult of fecundity/fertility. All the temples in Malta,
indeed, have been built on a layer of red earth, which reminds the color
of blood and then the idea of generative and vital power.
