Map of the Ggantija temple (Island of Gozo, Maltese archipelago), a
megalithic monument which dates back to from 3600 to 2500 B.C. The shape
of the inner chambers of the building recalls the profile of a female
being, as it is generally represented in the sculptures. This typology
of monuments can be found in several sites on the Malta archipelago
(see figure below). According to M. Gimbutas’s interpretation,
this female symbolism is applicable to most of the megalithic monuments
(Gimbutas 2005b).
