Figures above and below:
Two pairs of female statuettes from Tell Halaf (on the Khabur river
in Syria), dating to the VI millennium B.C. The posture of the figures,
holding the breast with their hands, suggests in this case too an emphasis
on the maternal and generative function. The face is reduced to a scarcely
outlined shape and lacking any feature, as it occurred in the “Venuses”
of the Paleolithic period. The objects are in the Vorderasiatisches
Museum Berlin (Museum of the Ancient Near East), Staatliche Museen zu
Berlin, Germany. |
