Earthenware statuette belonging to the Tisza culture, found at Szegvár-Tüzköves
(Hungary) and dating to 5000 B.C. The figure represents a man sitting
on a stool and holding in his hand a sickle or a crooked stick, interpreted
by Marija Gimbutas as a crosier (Gimbutas 2005b). These instruments
are the attributes of mythological figures which appear in later civilizations,
such as Silvanus, Faunus or Pan, forest spirits, masters of the wild
animals and patrons of the shepherds and hunters. The object is in the
Koszta Josef Museum, Szentes, Hungary.
