World of the Dead

Back

Stone sculpture from Nevali Çori, a Neolithic site in eastern Turkey which dates back to the middle of the IX millennium B.C. The human face shows large orbit cavities and a wide open mouth, which give it a ghostly appearance: it could be the representation of a dead or an ancestor. In the same site have been discovered the most ancient exemplars of temple structures and sculptures in stone. Great monolithic pillars formed a circular structure, as at Göbekli Tepe, surrounded by dry stone walls. The object is in the Sanliurfa Museum, Turkey.
