World of the Dead

Stone masks found at Nahal Hemar (Israel), a cave site where the most ancient remains of the pre-ceramic Neolithic of the Near East have been found (about 10,000-8,000 years B.P.). one of the masks has holes alongside the margin, from which it is assumed that it was possibly worn. The particularly gloomy aspect could recall a ghostly appearance, while the sharp and prominent teeth suggest a link with the wilderness. Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
