Menhir at Belle-Île-en-Mer, locally known as « Jean
», Brittany, France. The word menhir comes from the Welsh maen
(stone) and hir (long) and defines a megalithic structure made
up of a single upright stone. In many cases these stones are disposed
in long rows, or in circles: some of the menhirs observable in Brittany
are 6 meters high. At the present time the precise function of these
monuments is unknown.
