World of the Dead

Back

Interior of the megalithic tomb of Locmariaquer (Brittany, France) known as Table des Marchands (“Table of the Merchants”). The upright slab shows a series of hook or waving signs, seemingly radiating from the centre, interpreted by Marija Gimbutas (2005b) as representations of the concept of fertilizing energy emanating from the earth. On the horizontal table the figure of a big ax is engraved, reminding of the heavenly powers represented by thunder and lightning and linked with the image of the warrior. In this case, too, we find out the combination of the complementary generative powers from the earth and the destructive powers coming from the heaven, expressing the relationship between life and death.
