Figures above and below:
Stone stele from Göbekli Tepe in Anatolia (Turkey), one of the
most ancient ceremonial complexes of Prehistory, dating back to 9,500
B.C. Most
of the steles found in this site show engravings representing different
animals (felines, boars, scorpions, birds) whereas no explicit human
figure appears. However, some steles, the shape of which is approximately
quadrangular, show on the shortest side human hands and a kind of loincloth
made with an animal skin. From this we can surmise that the stele could
be conceived to reveal, in a concealed way, a human shape, perhaps that
of a divinity or a spirit, whose visible manifestation was in an animal
form.
