Bone plate found in 1868 in the Laugerie-Basse rock shelter, at Les Eyzies-de-Tayac
(Dordogne, France), showing an engraved figure of a pregnant woman, apparently
lying down, facing an animal (possibly a reindeer) of large dimensions.
The representation evokes a symbolic relationship between human fecundity
and the animal world. The artifact is attributed to the Magdalenian period
(about 15,000 years B.P.) and actually is exhibited in the Musée
des Antiquités Nationales, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Paris, France. |
