Human-Animal
Transformation |
|
Mammoth
ivory statuette representing a therianthropic being, with human posture
and a lion’s head. The upper limbs show cross engravings which
could suggest scarifications. The complex can be interpreted as a ritual
disguise or the representation of the transformation from human into
animal or vice-versa. The artifact has been found in the Hohlenstein-Stadel
cave, in south-western Germany and dates back to the Aurignacian period
(34/30,000 years B.P.). The object is now exhibited at the Ulmer Museum
in Ulm, Germany.
